New York City once sold a promise of free prekindergarten for all as an unusual benefit designed to make it far easier to raise children in this expensive city. So as families worried over whether their 3-year-olds would have spots this fall, Mayor Eric Adams pledged last month that everyone would have “access” to a seat. Every 4-year-old in New York is guaranteed a free preschool seat, and 3-year-olds were next in line for a universal program. On Thursday, about 2,500 children did not receive a prekindergarten offer, leaving their parents in limbo. Many are still on huge waiting lists and scrambling to rethink their finances and future in the city.

German elementary school is 4 yearsIn Germany, kids go straight from preschool (which is called Kindergarten in Germany) to elementary school; there is no year of Kindergarten as Americans know it. German elementary school ends in fourth grade. When I drop my younger kids off at preschool, I see hordes of elementary school kids en route to school sans grownups.

Teddy was the youngest person in the country to get a brain implant to help. Still, Oster understands that all the research in the world can't balance out the emotional and lifestyle impacts that come with pregnancy complications. AdvertisementParents should be more worried about raising independent kidsA big picture concern that parents don't spend enough time on is fostering independence, Oster said. She encourages physical independence by having her kids walk home from school, a distance of about three blocks. The school was somewhat skeptical, but when Oster explained why the kids would be walking, they acquiesced. In addition, Oster doesn't drop off items her kids forget at home, like cleats for practice or a school folder.

Millennials are anxious avocado-eaters who'll never own property, while Gen Zers are depressed snowflakes who take liberties at work. So in the spirit of finding some common ground amid all the mud-slinging, BI asked six therapists what their clients from different generations commonly talk about in therapy. Gen Alpha are also forming friendships outside their family and independent of their parents or carers, and that's reflected in what kids worry about. Diana Garcia, a therapist in Florida, works mainly with older Gen Zers between 18 and 26. MillennialsLike Gen Zers, millennials, who are in their late 20s to early 40s, also feel insecure because they compare the "perfect lives" they see on social media with their own, Owen said.

A growing group of America's young people are not in school, not working, or not looking for work. They're called "disconnected youth" or "opportunity youth," and their ranks have been growing for nearly three decades. So last October, at the age of 80, Murray ended her retirement and got a job giving out samples at Costco. Forecasters expect that cohort of older , working Americans to double over the next decade. “More people are working at desk jobs that don’t require much physical labor,” said Gal Wettstein, a senior research economist at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. “That’s people who are changing jobs, younger workers and non-college educated workers.” Older workers tend not to change jobs, and they’re more likely to have a college degree. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) forbids age discrimination against people who are age 40 or older in the workplace.

Westfield Public Schools held a regular board meeting in late March at the local high school, a red brick complex in Westfield, N.J., with a scoreboard outside proudly welcoming visitors to the “Home of the Blue Devils” sports teams. But it was not business as usual for Dorota Mani. In October, some 10th-grade girls at Westfield High School — including Ms. Mani’s 14-year-old daughter, Francesca — alerted administrators that boys in their class had used artificial intelligence software to fabricate sexually explicit images of them and were circulating the faked pictures. Five months later, the Manis and other families say, the district has done little to publicly address the doctored images or update school policies to hinder exploitative A.I. “It seems as though the Westfield High School administration and the district are engaging in a master class of making this incident vanish into thin air,” Ms. Mani, the founder of a local preschool, admonished board members during the meeting.

Senator Patty Murray got inspired to enter politics when a male state legislator derided her efforts to fight budget cuts to early education programs, calling her “just a mom in tennis shoes” — a remark she would proudly adopt as her campaign slogan. Tucked into the $1.2 trillion spending law Congress cleared last week was an additional $1 billion for a single year for child care and early education programs. Ms. Murray accomplished that feat against substantial political headwinds. Their agreement effectively froze expenditures on everything except the military, translating into deep cuts to social programs. But Ms. Murray, together with Representative Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, her Democratic counterpart in the House, pushed Republicans to accept a 9 percent increase in spending for child care subsidies for low-income families, and a $275 million increase in spending for Head Start, the federal program for low-income preschool children.

"Sometimes parents need to get away alone," I responded repeatedly. This controversy is what steers some parents away from a much-needed child-free escape. Lindsay Karp realized that she felt guilty for leaving her kids with their grandparents on vacation, but her husband was able to relax. My sister, Nikki Addimando, was at the police station. I needed to pick up my nephew Ben, who was 4, and his sister Faye, who was 2. Over the course of the day I learned that my sister had shot and killed her partner, the father of her children, a person I had known for a decade. But some smaller, more specialized tax credits and deductions could score you hundreds (or even thousands) of extra dollars back as well. Here's an overview of some overlooked federal and state tax credits that filers often miss. At first glance, this might seem counterintuitive — why wouldn't you deduct state income tax, which is usually a larger sum? A majority of Hispanics, and even a plurality of Black voters, said Biden’s policies would cause inflation to rise, the survey found. You can’t not make the contrast and comparison.”These negative retrospective assessments of the Biden and Trump economic records create huge headwinds for the president. “Voters—even past Biden voters who disapprove of his economic record—clearly reject what Trump and Republicans are offering,” Democratic pollster Margie Omero said in an email. After voters were exposed to Biden’s populist arguments, assessments of his economic record improved in the group’s polling, Clark said. But even after hearing that case, most voters in the group’s surveys still gave Biden negative marks for his economic performance, the study found.

Last week, House Republicans passed a budget proposal outlining their priorities, which are far afield from what Democrats have called for. Mr. Biden has sought to reclaim strength on economic issues with voters who have given him low marks amid rapid inflation. But Mr. Biden has been unwavering in his core economic-policy strategy, and the budget is not expected to deviate from that plan. White House officials, previewing the budget release, said Mr. Biden would propose about $3 trillion in new measures to reduce the budget deficit over the next decade. House Republicans released a budget last week that seeks to reduce deficits much faster — balancing the budget by the end of the decade.

The biggest takeaway came from the reviews of voters like Lang: loyal Democrats who have raised important policy and performance issues about the president. On Thursday, these voters saw a president who was listening to their concerns, but they also said that steps in the right direction did not mean the problem was solved. In Biden’s speech, Lang saw some proof that his team is listening. She is more conservative than Biden but saw things to like in his speech, including his “commitment to democracy.”Two topics hit home. “Striking to hear President Biden call for free preschool, but not support the right of families like mine to use our own tax dollars for K-12 education,” Gurr said.

For example, Massachusetts has the highest average childcare costs, where day care for an infant is $24,472. I'm stuck in between — one kid in public school and a younger one still in day care.
